Eating in Viveiro

Eating in Viveiro

Located in the Rías Altas, Viveiro is the capital of the region of La Mariña Occidental. With an important fishing population, fish and seafood are some of the more demanded and appreciated dishes of the locality. The best part? Eating in Viveiro gives you the possibility of discovering high-quality bars and restaurants with reasonable prices. Long live the gastronomy of Galicia!

Its location provides this town with great quality in terms of fish and seafood. You can also find typical Galician dishes like octopus a la feira, seafood cakes, crab, barnacles, baby squid… The empanadas are indispensable in this cuisine rich in seafood like cockles, sardines, and res. Between the many kinds of fish, the hake is the star of a large variety of dishes although, to really taste its delicious flavor, it is best simply grilled.

Meats are also of great importance in the local cuisine. A perfect option is to try a churrasco in one of the many establishments located in Viveiro. The town’s gastronomy, as well as that of Galicia in general, is highly caloric, especially in winter, when cooks take advantage of the many products resulting from slaughter. To finish the meal, there’s nothing better than the delicious tarta de Viveiro, an almond tart similar to that made in Santiago.

At O Rincon Do Tronco, they have a small menu with carefully selected recipes. The perfect place to have a snack and try zamburiñas (scallops) and octopus a feira.

We also recommend stopping by the Cervecería Fragata, where they specialize in ham and tapas. It’s found right in the middle of the town’s historical center.

The options for where to eat in Viveiro are ample and high-quality. A great choice is the hotel Boa Vista, a gastronomic hotel where you’ll be able to try the best seafood that comes directly from the Lonja de Celerio. They offer traditional Galician recipes with more modern preparation, based on both land and sea products (the region’s meats are also a central ingredient).

La Quinta Asador offers the best in-season products, which is why it’s ideal for eating in Viveiro and trying the local gastronomy. Their grilled meat is spectacular, and the daily menu is a great value.

At Mesón A Fonte, we recommend trying their fish and seafood. If you’re looking for a place to try local dishes, Mesón Imperial has a tasting menu for just 10 euros.
