As the capital of the region of La Noguera, Balaguer has a gastronomy that sums up the culinary tradition of the area where it is located. The agriculture in general (and specially the fruit) is one of the identity marks of the village. The quality of the apples, pears from Lleida with D.O.P, watermelons and other species is well known when eating in Balaguer. This type of cultivation, though, is not very common in the south region of Lleida.
The most consumed meat, and the one that represents the biggest part of the ranching, is the pork. With it, when winter arrives, a broad variety of traditional embutidos (sausage) is produced in order to be eaten during the rest of the year. Generally, the restaurants of Balaguer offer a typical gastronomy from Lleida, translated into stews, hunt meats, snails a la llauna, calçots with romesco sauce and ecalibada and ratatouille cocas. In Balaguer, you will also be able to find wine products such as the wine D.O. Costers del Segre and the wine D.O. Cataluña.
