As we said before, in Padrón there is a wide range of interesting places to visit. We suggest you to start your visit in the House-museum of Rosalía de Castro. It was the place where she stayed while she was in Padrón. The museum was inaugurated in 1972 and it was declared historic monument in 1974. It is a tribute of the Galician people to the love that the poet professed to them.
After this visit, we recommend you eating around Macias square to recharge your energies. In that area you can have a beautiful walk through the Paseo del Espolón, located next to the river Sar and sheltered by banana trees. It is a quiet place to walk peacefully, in the northern area you will find Rosalía de Castro’s statue, made by José María Mateos. Close to it, you will be able to enjoy the Santiago Bridge. This bridge allows crossing the river Sar and connects the area of “A trabanca” with the old town of Padrón. The bridge was built in 1852 and it is perfectly conserved.
You can also visit the Fuente del Carmen, located next to the bridge of Santiago and in front of the Convento del Carmen. It was built to commemorate the translation of the Apostle Santiago’s body. The fountain has an image of the Virgen de los Dolores. It is supposed to have the power to give pregnant women a good birth, after they ask for it with faith. Finally, in this area you must visit the Church of Santiago de Padrón. Built in the year 920 and it has had multiple reforms until 1867, when the last one was finished. The church of Santiago de Padrón, keeps inside the Pedrón. Symbol that gives name to the locality. El Pedrón was the mooring place of the boat that led the lifeless body of the Apostle Santiago, in its transfer from Haffa to the port of Iria Flavia. Guided by an angel and accompanied by his disciples Theodore and Athanasius.
Next day we recommend you visiting the Camilo José Cela Foundation. It was inaugurated in 1991. This foundation aims to save the personal and artistic documents of the author, as well as preserve their cultural, human and anecdotal heritage.
To complete the day you can also visit the da Esclavitude Church. It is located a bit farther from the old town of Padrón. The da Esclavitude Church is from the 18th century and it has a Baroque style. To access it you have to climb a stone staircase with two lateral accesses. The legend tells that a patient on his way to the hospital in Santiago de Compostela stopped to drink at the fountain. This fountain had the image of a virgin in stone. Then the sick man asked the virgin for a cure and then he drank from the water. After 72 hours he was cured of the illness he had.
