Palafrugell is a village that belongs to the region of the Bajo (Low) Ampurda, a place that has a culinary tradition that sums up in a perfect way the essence of the territory. The fact that it is close to the sea is the reason why most of the restaurants of the municipality serve numerous types of fish and fresh seafood.
The interior vegetable gardens provide all kinds of fruits and vegetables for the city. Meat from the local ranching and hunting arrive from the surrounding mountains. Also, the forests are a source of mushrooms and berries. With all of these ingredients many different types of stews, rice, escalibadas and suquets, typical from the Catalan cuisine, are prepared in Palafrugell.
If there is a representative product from the region, that is the garoina or the sea urchin. Its soft meat and intense sea flavor are some of its main qualities. Between January and March the Garoinada takes place. This is a gastronomic campaign where many restaurants offer different recipes that have the garoina as the main ingredient. Complete this gastronomic experience with the local wines, such as the D.O Empordà and the D.O. Cataluña.
