Eating in Combarro

In the seafaring village of Combarro, seafood is a culinary specialty. This locality offers a fresh, high-quality gastronomy combined with a dreamlike coastal landscape. The variety of bars and restaurants to eat at in Combarro isn’t extensive, but you still have a few choices. Let’s go eat!

Known for its unusual granaries, popular houses and cross statues, Combarro has a gastronomic offering at the same level as its beautiful surroundings. If you want to know what to eat in this town with a long seafood tradition, products from the river are the basis of most local menus. If you love fish, try a good flounder or turbot stew, typical to the region.

On the 15th of August, the town’s inhabitants celebrate the Fiesta del Mejillón (Festival of the Mussel), which started on Combarro’s sea vessels, and where you can discover all of the recipes made with this mollusk with D.O.P.  Barnacles, clams, mussels, crab, and the classic octopus are some of the dishes that you can taste at the Festa do Mar (Festival of the Sea) that’s celebrated in Poio during the penultimate week in August.

Wash down all of these culinary offerings with the white, red, and sparking wines with D.O. Rias Baixas. If you visit the town in November, don’t miss the opportunity to attend the Fiesta de la Castaña (Festival of the Chestnut), which is celebrated on the 11th, and enjoy this ancient tradition in which Chestnuts (a product with I.G.P.) are roasted in every part of the municipality.

If you want to get some tapas, at Novocombarro you’ll find good pinchos that aren’t exclusively Galician. It’s located at the port, so it will be easy to find. We recommend the homemade octopus croquettes.

Tapería Rúa 19 is a centrally located restaurant with a terrace and detailed decoration. You should try the chipirones (small squid) and volandeiras (scallop) tapas. Excellent quality-price ratio.

There are various places to eat in Combarro. The restaurant O Peirao de Rial occupies one of the oldest buildings in town, and offers traditional Galician cuisine with fish, seafood and meats. They also make delicious artisanal pizzas.

At El Ancla, you can order a complete mariscada (a large plate of seafood) at a good price. Their tasting menu includes in-season seafood and fish and house wine for 25 euros. Dogs are also welcome.
