The gastronomy of Figueres is known for the intention of unifying sea and mountain; the interior cuisine with products from the Mediterranean sea. At the local restaurants you will find many typical products from Catalonia such as the snails, the calçots de valls and the apple of Girona (both with I.G.P.), apart from all kinds of rice, meat, fish, stews and dishes called “from sea and mountains” that mix, in the same recipe, products from different origin such as the chicken and shrimp or cuttlefish and snails. Regarding the meat, Figueres is famous for its embutidos (sausage) thanks to the sweet butifarra, a product that can be eaten raw or cooked.
The onion of Figueres is the most representative product of the region, and it can be identified for its pink color and great taste. Its production has grown up little by little through the whole region of Ampurdán. The desserts from Figueres are celebrated during the Feria de San José, also known as the Feria del Buñuelo.
Finally, as a wine production area, in September the Muestra del vino de Ampurdán is also celebrated, a moment when you will be able to find the wines with D.O. Empordà and Catalonia.
