There is a lot to eat in Vilanova i la Geltrú, a beautiful coastal village that belongs to the region of Garraf. In the traditional gastronomy of the town, the Mediterranean recipes are everywhere, as they are very common in throughout the whole Catalan coast. One of the most popular dishes in Vilanova i la Geltrú if the xató, a sauce (made with olive oil mixed with chopped ñoras – a type of pepper – almonds, hazelnuts, garlic and vinegar) that is used to season a escarole salad with cod, tuna, anchovies and olives. This is a local specialty also eaten in the neighbor village of Sitges.
Another example of the gastronomy of Vilanova i la Geltrú is the “Ajo Cremado”, a traditional maritime stew made with toasted garlic, oil, tomato and potato, which is usually put in the fresh fish of the region. Generally, the menus of the restaurants offer all kinds of fish and seafood, rice, suquets, escudellas and other specialties of the region. One of the main products of the harbor are the “gambas de Vilanova” (shrimp), that due to their freshness have an intense and bright red color.
Regarding the dessert, the village is famous for the cookies known as Lunas de Vilanova; the meringue is also popular, as well as the tortas de chicharrones (also called coques de llardons). In Vilanova many wineries produce cava and D.O. wine such as the Catalunya and the Penedès.
