Eating in Arzúa

Eating in Arzua

Arzúa is located in the province of A Coruña, where the Camino del Norte meets the French Camino, a location that has motivated growth in the hotel industry there. If you’re wondering what to eat in Arzua, the answer is clear…You are in the city that has the Monument of Cheese! You therefore can’t leave without trying the Arzúa-Ulloa cheese with D.O. See our restaurant recommendations for Arzúa below.

All of the cuisine in Arzúa is based on the star product: the Arzúa cheese, protected under D.O. It’s a cheese prepared with natural whole cow’s milk, raw and pasteurized, which comes from rubia gallega, frisona, and pardo-alpinda lineages as well as their overlaps. In honor of this tasty product that’s a must-eat in Arzúa, they celebrate the “Festa do Queixo”, which has been happening during the first weekend of March, uninterrupted, since 1975 (except for when it coincides with carnavales, in which case the festivities are moved to the following weekend).

In addition to this delight, you can also eat traditional Galician dishes, such as capón, cocido gallego and lacón con grelos at the diverse array of establishments in Arzúa. There are also various seafood products available, such as octopus and diverse fish like hake.

Finally, for an unbeatable finish to your dining experience in Arzúa, you can’t miss trying the filloas (Galician crepes) or some of the artisan pastry creations prepared in the city, such as the quince tart and Arzúa cheese.

The tapas bars in Arzúa are a great option. There is no better finish to a walk around the city than trying one of the more characteristic Galician dishes, octopus. We recommend ordering a tapa de pulpo at the Pulpería Santa María.

Another recommendation is the Mesón Restaurante Venus, a place ideal for having an appetizer or, if you’re interested, ordering from a menu. The quality-price ratio is better than acceptable and you’ll find all of the typical dishes eaten in Arzua: raxo, pulpo, and a delicious ternera.

Finally, the Bar O Mario, an establishment that’s simple but perfect for making a stop in Camino de Santiago. The hamburger of the house is very well-known, perfect for the traveller who wants to recover their strength.

We highlight the following establishments for eating from a menu in Arzua:

First, we recommend Casa Teodora, where you can enjoy great food. Being one of the older restaurants in the area, it is very well-known. If you’re a traveller and looking for a good menu with good prices, this is your place.

The restaurant Casa Chelo is a place with a typical Galician, home-like atmosphere. On their menu you’ll find octopus empanadas, cheese toast with peppers, bacalao a la gallega, mackerel…The specialty of the house is the ‘carne a la ½ hora’. We also recommend their desserts, especially the cheesecake prepared exactly in the Galician fashion.

Finally, to eat in Arzúa we recommend the Restaurante A Painza, which is located a few minutes by car from the center of town but worth the journey. It’s a restaurant with a slightly rustic appearance, located in a house made of stone. The entrecot is highly recommended. In general, they serve homemade food of high quality.
