Eating in San Martin del Castañar

San Martin del Castañar, a village from Salamanca, is located in the Sierra de Francia. It is surrounded by a unique landscape with a hill climate, reason why it is a must do to try the ham of the place, which has Denomination of Origin. Even though it is a small village, we suggest that you try some of the restaurants and tapas of the place.

In San Martín del Catañar you will find an interesting castle and one of the oldest bullrings in Spain. Regarding the food, you will find the best sausages and hams, cured in a way that only the hill climate could allow. So don’t miss the opportunity of eating the fantastic Jamón de Guijuelo (ham) with D.O. in this village.

hornazo salamanca

The empanada “hornazo” is stuffed with chorizo and boiled egg. If you need advice about some of the best food to have in San Martin del Castañar, we would suggest the traditional “meneás” or the calderillo bejarano.

You also should not miss the opportunity of trying a good stake or chuletón of morucha meat, a local type of cow which is really dark and tasty.

Order some of the wines of the zone: Arribes, Sierra de Salamaca and Tierra del Vino de Zamora, all of them with Denomination of Origin.

Finally, try the artisan sweets of the village: the typical perrunillas, maimones cakes and huesillos de Béjar.

This is a small village, so it might be hard to find a tapas place here. We highlight the Bar el Pilón, located in the Plaza Mayor, where you can get some rest after visiting San Martin del Castañar. Another possibility is the Bar el Chiringuito, which is further away from the center of the village but has a great terrace in the middle of a small park. And, of course, great food.

There’s not many places to eat in San Martin del Castañar. We recommend the restaurant Abadía de San Martín, where traditional dishes with a modern touch are served. It also has a nice terrace. On the other hand, you could eat in Casa Troylo too, which has a small menu of typical but contemporary meals.
