Homemade Spanish churros recipe

Churros are very popular in Spain. Indeed, they are the traditional breakfast par excellence. You can find them in any bar from all around the country. The recipe is very easy and has no complications. The dough only needs flour, water and salt. If you have a churro maker (churrera), it is ideal, but if you do not we have an alternative. If you have never tried this dish, you cannot miss it; prepare it at home and serve it with a delicious hot chocolate for churros! Shall we start?

Ingredients:

  • 250 g of wheat flour
  • 250 ml water (same amount as the flour)
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • Sunflower oil
  • A churro maker (churrera) or a piping bag with a star-shaped tip.

We recommend you buy a churro maker (churrera), it is fundamental for them to be perfect. They are very cheap and you can find them quickly. The other option is the piping bag. The problem with the latter is that it will be difficult to get all the air out of the dough and for the churros to come out regular.  Be very careful when you fry them, it they have air the oil can splatter.

How to make the homemade Spanish churros recipe:

  1. Put the flour in a large bowl. In a pan heat the water with the salt.
  2. When it starts boiling, pour it directly and at once onto the flour. With a wooden spoon integrate the flour with the water. The dough will be very sticky and quite compact.
  3. Now introduce this dough into a churro maker (churrera) or pastry bag.
  4. Shape the churros by bringing the ends of the raw dough portions you take out from the churrera together. You can give them the shape you want.
  5. Heat a frying pan with plenty of sunflower oil.
  6. When it is hot, introduce the portions of dough to fry. Before frying, measure the temperature of the oil, it should be between 195º and 200º C.
  7. Thus, fry over a medium heat to prevent the churros from being raw inside. They should be golden.
  8. Once fried, take them out and place them on a kitchen paper to soak up the excess oil.
  9. Sprinkle the churros with sugar (if you want) and serve!

Our advice: hot chocolate with churros

You can combine the churros with a delicious hot chocolate, perfect for dipping them in. To prepare it, you will only need 2 bars of dark chocolate and 1 litre of milk.

  1. Heat the milk in a pot. Split each ounce of the chocolate and add it.
  2. Stir and when it starts to boil, remove from the heat. When the chocolate stops bubbling, put it back on the heat until it starts to boil (to make it denser).
  3. Cook stirring until the chocolate is completely dissolved and has a light texture.
