Tips on Places to Stay in Markina-Xemein

In the Biscayan comarca of Lea-Artibai we can find Markina-Xemein, a town that shares a border with Gipuzkoa and owes its name to its defensive efforts against the historical attacks by their neighbors from Gipuzkoa. If you visit Xemein, you can’t leave without stopping at Plaza Goiko, where you’ll find some of the town’s most important landmarks including El Carmen Convent and Church and the town hall. There are no places to stay in Markina-Xemein itself, but you can consider staying in one of the surrounding towns.

The selection of places to stay in Markina-Xemein is not just scarce, it’s nonexistent. Our first suggestion for places to spend the night is Satzu House, a five-century-old mansion which has been refurbished while still preserving the original structure. It is located three kilometers from Xemein in Ubilla-Urberuaga. It consists of six rooms, some with private bathrooms and others with shared bathrooms, so make sure to confirm which one you’ll have when you make your reservation. The price of breakfast is not included, but it’s delicious and worth the money.

Another one of our recommendations is Intxauspe House, located in the fourth stage of the Camino de Santiago along the Northern Coast (Deba-Markina) and five minutes walking from Xemein. It has six double rooms and pretty grounds with a garden and fruit trees. If you stay here, you can partake in various outdoor activities on Santa Eufemia Hill and Kalamua y Oiz Hill, and you can also take advantage of several hiking trails.

Hotel Antsotegi is another place that we like because of its location; in Extebarría, it’s just a few minutes from Xemein by car. The hotel has cozy common spaces including a dining room with an open floor plan, which gives the hotel a hint of grandeur. The friendliness of the owners is what wins over guests, and if you dine at the hotel’s restaurant, you can enjoy some delicious Basque dishes.
