Eating in Baiona

Eating in Baiona

The municipality of Baiona is found between the town of Oya and the Atlantic Ocean, which is why the local gastronomy is abundant in seafood. The desserts are also great. There are restaurants and taverns where you can order the dishes and tapas that get your attention. Your choice!

In the Lower Rias, where Pinzón arrived with the first news of the discovery of America, you’ll find Baiona. If you want to know where to eat in Baiona, pass through its historical port and discover the great variety of fish and seafood offered at the local market, like crab, Mejillón (mussels with D.O.P.), and barnacles. Enjoy the classic Galician octopus at the town’s many taverns, prepared in the local style, a feira, and served with a good wine of the D.O. Rías Baixas.

Like any Galician town, the cooks in Baiona prepare many dishes typical to the region, like the famous emapanada, hake a la gallega, clams a la merinera, etc… all recipes with earned recognition beyond Galician borders. On the 26th of September, day of San Cosme and San Damián, they celebrate the Festival of Honey and Nuts, the most well-known gastronomic event in Baiona, where you’ll discover many local agricultural products, including the Honey of Galicia. The filloas rellenas (similar to crepes, also called marruchos), melindres, and bica de nata (similar to sponge cake) are the typical desserts made by the town’s artisans.

For eating tapas and sharing smaller portions, re recommend the Pulperia El Balneario. Scallops and stewed squid are their best dishes. The place is cozy, with wooden beams and rustic decor.

At the Taberna Del Azafrán, they serve octopus with clams and a very good fish cake, with modern decor and a terrace. The menu also has smaller portions like chicken strips, perfect to share.

We’ve selected some of the best places to eat in Baiona. In the Parador there are two restaurants, Torre del Príncipe and Enxebre (the second is only open in summer), that serve carefully-crafted traditional cuisine. Their specialty is rice with fish.

At O Moscón and Paco Durán (the latter being in Bahiña, a high point from which you can see Baiona), both by chef Paco Durán, you’ll find excellent rices, fish, and seafood. At the restaurant O Moscón, the quality of their lobster and crayfish is what stands out. At Paco Durán we recommend taking a look at their complete menu of wines while you enjoy good fish and pleasant views offered by the location.

In Sabarís (3.5 kim away) you’ll find O Rizon, a pleasant restaurant with a terrace and garden as well as traditional cuisine of high quality. For an appetizer the calamari is a sure bet. The rice and the cockles are also a great option.
