The former residence of Alfonso X the Wise, Allariz has an extensive cuisine. To figure out what to eat in Allariz walk through the streets where the legendary man wolf- a famous Spanish criminal- once roamed. Certainly, he also ordered delicious tapas like Galician octopus, tasty potatoes and Rexo cheese. Rexo cheese is the pride of this town and is made with unpasteurized sheep milk only produced in Galicia. It matures over 90 days, which provides its delicious flavor.
Another culinary pride in Allariz is its pastries. Try the macaroons, doughnuts, almonds, the famous melindres or the tarta real. Discover the secrets to their handmade creation at the Feria del Dulce that is celebrated toward the beginning of September.
At the Feria de Otoño, you will find, like in every Galician village, specialties that you should not leave without trying, like roasted chestnuts or honey.
The Fiesta de la Empanada that is celebrated in the month of August, in the Campo de Vilanova, has become a regular event since it began in 1971. If you attend the festival you will have the opportunity to sample a series of empanadas, ranging from the most traditional meat, like tuna or cod, to the most innovative, like conger eel, octopus, prawn, squid or sausage.
Don’t forget to sample the local wines which are perfect to accompany dinner in Allariz: Vino Ribeiro, Vino Monterrei and Vino Valdeorras, all with Certificate of Origin.
